Print & Stitch | Gelli-plate Printing & Embroidery, Isle of Bute
Print your own fabric, then stitch it into something you'll actually use.
Print & Stitch brings together gelli plate printing and embroidery over two days, taught by two artists, and finishes with a sketchbook or journal cover made entirely from fabric you've printed and stitched yourself.
This workshop works equally well whether you're an experienced maker or trying both techniques for the first time. There's no need to have printed on fabric before, and no need to have used a sewing machine — hand embroidery is just as welcome.

A two-day workshop combining gelli plate printing on fabric with embroidery, run jointly by two artists.
Day one is print-focused
Day two is stitch-focused
The two days build directly one on each other — by the end, your printed fabric becomes a finished piece.

On day one you will be guided by me, focusing on gelli plate printing techniques applied to fabric.
Day two is taught by Alison Stein (Clarke), a well-known textile artist on the Isle of Bute and a regular participant in IBAC's Bute Studio Trail, who will guide you through hand and/or free machine embroidery.

You'll leave with a sketchbook or journal cover, made entirely from fabric you've printed and embroidered yourself over the two days.

To do free machine embroidery on this course please bring your own sewing machine.
If you don't have a sewing machine that doesn’t exclude you from the course — come prepared to do hand sewing and embroidery instead, and you'll still complete the full project.

Each person will receive a pack of paper and 1 m x 1 m white cotton fabric
Paint and inks are all provided.
There will also be a selection of bought stencils, stamps and other mark making ephemera available for you to use but if you already have some of your own feel free to bring them with you.
Bring your own gelli plate(s) if you have one/them
If you don’t, let me know if you want to purchase one from me so I can order in advance
Or request a gelli plate recipe to prepare before you come.
Bring a selection of your own threads and needles for your machine or hand stitch embroidery.
A welcome letter will go out closer to the time with suggestions on how to prepare for the workshop and anything else you need to bring.

This workshop is capped at 8 participants, held at Alison's studio in Ardbeg Rothesay.
