"Island Whispers of Rain" represents a seascape monotype art print that diverges from Carol Nunan's typical style.
Carol explains, 'This print is one of a trio, drawing inspiration from my early encounters on the Isle of Bute. In those first months, I frequently greeted the dawn, setting out on drives around the island as the sun graced the horizon, regardless of the weather. Even amidst obscured horizons and persistent rainfall, the island's charm, especially the view from the entrance to Ardscalpsie out to the sea and the ethereal sight of Holy Island near the tip of Arran through the mist, held a unique allure. The ever-shifting light painted a continuous transformation on the sea. During these mornings, I swiftly captured loose paintings in my sketchbook, aiming to infuse this unrestrained, painterly essence into my prints.'

"Shimmering Showers at St. Ninian's" stands as a seascape monotype art print that marks a departure from Carol Nunan’s customary style.
She says, ‘Part of a trio of prints, it was inspired by my initial experiences on the Isle of Bute. During the first month or two of my arrival, I'd often rise at dawn, embarking on drives around the island as the sun emerged on the horizon – regardless of the weather. Even amid obscured horizons and driving rain, the island and its vistas over St. Ninian's Bay and the Kyles possessed a special quality, the light playing upon the sea in perpetual transformation. Amid these mornings, I'd swiftly capture loose paintings in my sketchbook, seeking to infuse this free, painterly essence into my prints.’

"Before The Storm at Scalpsie" stands as a muted artist proof seascape art print, inspired by Carol Nunan's early island explorations. The genesis of this print occurred after a Sunday beach walk on Scalpsie Beach. While observing dramatic rocky formations that jutted out of the sandy shore, she also observed a colony of seals precariously basking on the offshore rocks. The collagraph element of the plate meticulously treated with a blowtorch to yield textured intricacies. The print vividly captures the island's mercurial weather. Rain drifts across the sea towards the land, only to be swept away again as the wind shifts, encapsulating the transient nature of island weather.

"Before The Storm at Scalpsie" is a unique seascape art print born from Carol Nunan's early island explorations. The print expertly blends the techniques of monotype and collagraph, with the collagraph element of the plate even being textured using a blowtorch.
The inspiration for this print struck shortly after a tranquil Sunday beach walk on Scalpsie Beach on the Isle of Bute off the west coast of Scotland. While observing the imposing rock formations emerging from the sand, she noticed a colony of seals perched precariously on the nearby rocks. Carol attempts the capture the dynamic interplay of weather on an island with this print – the rain drifting across the sea towards the land, and then shifting away once the wind changes direction. Carol hopes the result is an evocative portrayal of the dramatic moments just "Before The Storm at Scalpsie."

"Rúm Cuillins" celebrates the stunning landscapes of the Scottish Small Isles. This contemporary monotype print emerged from an art sailing residency I participated in during August 2022. I aimed to capture the essence of a damp Scottish summer day at sea, where brisk winds and rain intermingle with the gentle light glimmering off the water. Featured at the Festival of Printmaking at Stirling University this August 2024, each print tells a story, reflecting my experiences of the rich heritage and the quiet moments that inspire my creativity.

Across The Sands has been viewed by some as reminiscent of a desert scape and by others as a seascape print. Both interpretations are valid as the composition is imaginary but influenced by Carol’s time on the Northumberland coast and time spent in Namibia. It is a mixed media print combining paint and collagraph printmaking.

‘Pilgrimage’ is a Seascape Art Print by Irish artist Carol Nunan who now lives and works in Rothesay on the Isle of Bute after living in Northumberland for 33 years.
The print was inspired by the view across the Holy Island Causeway at low tide seen by many a pilgrim over the centuries following a weekend walking trip with her husband where they stayed on the island for a couple of nights.
‘I recently returned to monotype as a print medium having been inspired by the results of some test prints I created for a workshop using acetate stencils to create pebble shapes. I’d also just returned from a holiday in the Outer Hebrideswhich reminded me how much I love the sea whatever the weather. Holy Island continues to be a major source of inspiration for me.
It print is made up of multiple layers of ink using acetate stencils for the foreground and then layers of colour for the more painterly skies with the final layer being the silhouette of Lindiesfarne.’
