Giclée Fine Art Prints | Limited Edition Wildlife | Carol Nunan
INSPIRATION
Until November 2022, I lived not far from the vast rolling uplands of the Northumberland National Park where the endangered curlew still abounds, nesting in the grassy uplands and loughs in spring and summer, then departing for the coast in autumn and winter. The artist in me was drawn to the curlew's unmistakable silhouette. It only seemed right to incorporate within the print something that is found within their natural environment where they live. I hope my print will encourage people to look more carefully at (and therefore value) this fabulous, slightly other-worldly bird that has become a symbol of Northumberland.

"Nesting In the Breeze III"
This giclée reproduction print, titled "Nesting In the Breeze III," is based on the final piece in a series of three prints that utilize the monotype printmaking medium to depict contemporary seascapes. Created from the ghost image of its predecessors, this semi-abstract artwork showcases a colour palette of yellow, turquoise, and purples inspired by the unique silhouette of the curlew bird.
The focal point of the print captures two curlews scouring the pebble-patterned shoreline for sustenance, with floating feathers adding a sense of movement to the scene. While one of the three prints in this series has already been sold, "Nesting In the Breeze III" showcases the unique beauty of utilizing ghost images and vibrant colours to bring the curlew and pebble textures to life.

Big Swell is based on an original monotype print that got its inspiration the bird life one often sees on ferry crossings to the Isle of Bute and other Hebridean islands off the west coast of Scotland. On that occasion we were accompanied by flocks of Manx Shearwaters. This giclée print captures the moment, when the graceful flight of these magnificent seabirds carry out their characteristic flight above the rolling waves, bringing the harmony of land, sea, and nature's wonders into your home or work space with 'Big Swell'.

A Haunting Call from the Moors and Coast
The curlew's silhouette, is etched in my mind, stretching back to my time living in Northumberland. There, on the moorlands, their haunting call echoed across the landscape, yet a glimpse of the bird itself remained elusive. Now, on the Isle of Bute, the curlew's presence is a familiar sight, their graceful forms gracing the shorelines and the fields close to the sea.
Curlews have declined by 49% between 1995 and 2021 across the UK except on the Isle of Bute where you can still find them in apparent abundance. Nevertheless, we shouldn’t take them for granted.

The image for this print came to me in the middle of the night. A tapestry in the Museum of Scotland - abstract in bright reds and turquoise blues - coupled with a walk not long after, where we stumbled across two doe in a silver birch wood and Neolithic stone markings in a similar setting inspired this print.
I started by playing with a similar colour palette in the tapestry but as I began to print the plate, I went with the flow and allowed the colours to dictate where I went with the colours. For this print I chose to use shades of yellows and reds to convey summer in the woods

The idea for this print placing the focus on an owl on the hunt grew out of a series of prints I made featuring the endangered curlew. I work with distinctive silhouettes, castles and landscapes so I began to think about other wild birds that have a very distinctive silhouette. I’m working towards creating a series of prints focusing on our rich wild bird population in Northumberland. Many of them are endangered because of human activity. I want to use my work to remind us of what we have, to appreciate it and look after it for our children and grand children.

This reproduction limited edition giclée print is based on a colourful monotype/collagraph print that attempts to convey the lighter more optimistic mood at the start of a new day as the sun rises over the moors and turns the sky a soft pink. The original handmade wildlife print was inspired by a walk along Hadrian’s Wall at dawn on a winter’s day during Covid lockdowns, the stone walls and birds of prey who hunt across the Northumberland and Scottish moorlands and coasts.
The original print image size was 50 cm x 50 cm. You can also order a a bigger or smaller bespoke size (down to 20 cm x 20 cm ) to sit in a specific space.

A cool colour palette for a winter feel - a print combining monotype with collagraph printmaking and inspired by Irish artist Carol Nunan’s love of landscape and wildlife, particularly the endangered curlew, the emblem of the Northumberland National park. Carol who lives and works from her studio in Northumberland.
“I have come to recognise and love the haunting sound of the curlew on the moorland along Hadrian’s Wall and in it’s coastal habitat on both the Northumberland coast and the west coast of Scotland where I spend a lot of my time off in search of inspiration.
This is an imagined view.”

Giclée Fine Art Prints | Limited Edition | Carol Nunan

INSPIRATION
‘The Sill’, a landscape reproduction giclée print based on a handmade fine art original print by Irish artist Carol Nunan who lived and worked in Northumberland but now lives on The Isle of Bute.
The original print was created using a technique called blind embossing from a richly textured collagraph plate and incorporating monotype printmaking from nature taken from the hedgerows of the landscape where Carol lives and works.
‘I incorporate real plants into my work, plants that I pick from the roadside. I like to experiment with different ways of printing an existing plate too. Prior to making this particular print, I have inked and printed the same plate using these plants which had picked up the coloured ink on the underside. In this instance, I decided to allow the colour on the plants underside to create the focus in the print, so the base plate was ‘blind embossed’ i.e., no ink added to the plate surface, with the plants layer on the surface ink side up. The paper I used is Fabriano Rosapina because it has particularly good moulding properties to bring our the textured surface of the base plate.’

‘Callanish’ is a reproduction of an original landscape fine art print. Anyone who loves The Western Isles of Scotland and is drawn to the archaeological history of standing stones and stone circles may want to bring a piece of it into for their home or office space. Irish artist, Carol Nunan, who now lives on one of the Western Isles on The Isle of Bute created the semi-abstract monotype/collagraph, the original print on which this print is based and inspired by the view at dawn standing amongst the standing stones of Callanish.
“A few years ago we had a wonderful break on the Isle of Harris and had a lovely day out on the Isle of Lewis where Callanish can be found. I have a particular fondness for the Hebridean Islands. We have had many wonderful holidays on both inner and outer Hebrides from the Isle of Arran, Colonsay, Islay, the Isles of Harris and Lewis, Eigg and Mull. There’s still many more to visit.”

We had one of the most famous trees in the world sitting along Hadrian’s Wall between the Roman Fort of Housesteads and Milecastle 39. It came to fame when it featured in the Kevin Costner movie about Robin Hood. The tree was much photographed and painted. My own take on this iconic tree was that it sits within the Northumberland National Park which is a designated Dark Skies Park for the lack of light pollution and the fabulous night skies and frequent auroras that can be seen when conditions are right.

"Distant Isle" is the sixth print in a variable edition seascape that combines monotype and collagraph techniques. This reproduction revitalizes the original collagraph with luminous monotype underlayers. A found fishing net from the Isle of Bute adds texture and reflects environmental issues related to plastic waste. The piece is inspired by St. Cuthbert's Way and views of Lindisfarne Castle, honoring Northumbria's landscape and early Christian history. The net subtly prompts reflection on the beauty and fragility of nature.

‘Summer Evening Towards Lindisfarne’ is a view of Lindisfarne and Holy Island looking out to the headland from the shore. The colour palette was much softer and more muted than previous prints - e.g. St. Oswald’s Legacy’ and ‘Storm Brewing’. The colours I’ve used conjure the view as it might be at dawn.

‘Lindisfarne At Dawn’ showcases Lindisfarne Castle's silhouette rising from the mist on the Northumberland coast. Built on Holy Island using stones from Lindisfarne Priory after the dissolution of monasteries by King Henry VIII, it was later fortified by Elizabeth I. The island holds a rich Celtic Christian history dating back to the 6th century with Saints Aidan, Cuthbert, Eadfrith, and Eadberht bringing Celtic Christianity from Ireland and Iona. The original handmade print was part of a variable edition of 20, where I explore different colour palettes to convey various moods, seasons, and times of day.

This giclée seascape print, Snow-Capped Mountain Peaks, is based on a colourful original monotype. Inspired by the winter view of Goat Fell topped with snow on the Isle of Arran, as seen from the west coast of the Isle of Bute, this art print seeks to evoke the drama of the Scottish island landscape. Created intuitively through multiple layers of ink printed in succession, each layer influences the next, embracing the serendipitous interactions between print and plate during the pressing process. This unique approach captures the wild, dynamic essence of the Scottish west coast landscape.

Flight at Sunrise is a piece of wall art for those who love The Western Isles of Scotland and want to bring a piece of it into for your home or office space. Irish artist, Carol Nunan, who works in the UK created the original semi-abstract monotype art print on which this reproduction limited edition giclée print is based. It was inspired by the view at dawn from the road on the Isle of Barra over to Vatersay as the seagulls fly in towards the fish quay where the lobster pots are offloaded.
“A few years ago we had a wonderful break on the Isle of Barra. I have a particular fondness for the Hebridean Islands. We have had many wonderful holidays on both inner and outer Hebrides from the Isle of Arran, Colonsay, Islay, the Isles of Harris and Lewis, Eigg and Mull. The one I loved most was our list in 2019 to the Isle of Barra and Vatersay - the most beautiful of them all - so far. There’s still many more to visit.
The light and colours of the landscape on Barra was just amazing. There is something very special about how light and colour plays off the sea. This print is reminiscent of the view from the road way at the bottom of Barra as one approaches the causeway to Vatersay. We spent a lovely day up on the hills above the roadway exploring the ruins of an ancient settlement much of it covered by purple heather, delicate ferns and sea pinks.”

Safe Passage by St. Mary’s Lighthouse is a reproduction limited edition giclée print based on the original semi-abstract monotype fine art print inspired by the coastal rock formation patterns of Northumberland’s coastal geology. This art print was inspired by a coastal walk when the first Covid restrictions were lifted and we were allowed to travel a bit further from home to get out into the fresh air. St. Mary’s Lighthouse is an iconic landmark off the coast of Tyneside.
“The idea began with a lovely dog walk along the Northumberland coast during the early summer of 2020, when we were finally allowed to leave our homes after the lockdown. It was a beautiful sunny, breezy day and St. Mary’s Lighthouse was standing prominently on the rocks at low tide. As we walked south in the direction of the lighthouse I noticed the block like coastal rock formations, the cracks and the square shapes that jut into the sea.
That was my starting point for this print. I made a stencil based on those shapes and used the stencil repeatedly, in layers, to create patterns in the sky and under the water. The final step to finish the print off was the use of printed coastal grasses and seed heads. I made a stencil to use repeatedly to create patterns in the sky and water and finished with printed coastal grasses .“
