Getting to Bute

The island is easily accessible from Glasgow Central Station. Take a train to Wemyss Bay (approx 50 minutes) and catch the ferry to Rothesay (35 minutes).

Use the map below to help you if you are on foot or cycling. If you are coming by car with SAT NAV put in the post code PA20 0BG. Contact me for the full address. Written instructions are below.

Walking/Cycling Route From Rothesay Ferry Terminal

Exit the ferry terminal and head towards the town and Guildford Square. Turn right at Guilford Square and follow the main road on the seafront (Victoria Street, then Argyll Street) with the seafront gardens and Winter Gardens/Cinema on your right. After about 300 metres turn left up a narrow lane (Chapel Hill Road - currently there is no road sign) ) between a shop named SULA Collective and the Bute and Cowal Vets. The road climbs steeply and levels out after about 300 metres. You shortly arrive at 3 bungalows on your right side. The first of these is 16, Academy Road. The studio is at the far side of the house and carries the name ‘Sithean’. Ring the house doorbell or come down the far side of the house to the studio entrance.

Use the marked Google map above to help guide you.

Please get in touch before visiting to make sure I'm in the studio and ready to welcome you!

Visiting the Studio By Car

On leaving the ferry port, turn right at the traffic lights and travel along the seafront. Rothesay Pavilion — a large two-storey Bauhaus-style building with a curved glass frontage — will appear on your left. You'll currently see fenced-off containers in the road as the building is under renovation. Turn left immediately after the Pavilion into MacKinlay Street.

Follow the road up the hill, passing the prominently signed Apple Tree Nursery on your left. The road bends sharply left — stay on it. At the top of the hill you will see a small green area with trees on your left. Sithean is the third bungalow on your left. You can park on the street.

This route avoids the narrow lane opposite the park as described in the walking cycling route. It is the recommended route for larger vehicles.

Please note: The studio has two steps at the entrance and no handrail, and is not currently wheelchair accessible. If you have any mobility concerns please get in touch in advance and we'll do our best to help.

Bute Studio Trail

This year I'll be stepping back from Bute Studio Trail — organised by the Isle of Bute Artists' Collective and running on 18th and 19th July 2026, 10am–5pm — to take the chance to visit other studios myself.

If you're on the island that weekend and would like to visit, do get in touch. I'll do my best to find a time that works for both of us.
