INSPIRATION

I made this plate whilst attending a collagraph workshop with printmaker Peter Wray ( a fellow of the Royal Society of Painter/Printmakers RE). Peter introduced the use of a blow torch on different types of textured surfaces. I made several plates on the course - this one was made using wet materials and the blow torch on the surface before inking the plate and printing it. I deliberately avoided creating a plate with a particular image in mind. I simply played with the materials. I took a proof from the plate and only then allowed the image to suggest how I would proceed when I introduced colour. I had recently returned from the Hebrides and that is what image the shapes and textures suggested to me.

I have experimented with many different ways of printing this plate over several years. Each time the print is completely different from the last depending on the colour palette I have decided to use and as my technical knowledge of inking techniques as grown and changed.
