INSPIRATION

This vibrant abstract monotype print emerged from pure experimentation with mark-making tools and inks of different viscosities, with no predetermined outcome in mind. The joy lay simply in playing with colour and texture, allowing the printing process itself to guide the creation.

Only after completing the print and letting it rest did I return to discover what images it evoked. In the bold, contrasting colors and dynamic marks, I saw distant hills and the brilliance of the sun climbing over the horizon - memories of countless beautiful sunrises witnessed across Scotland and Northumberland over the years.

Returning to teaching reignited my passion for this intuitive approach to printmaking. The varied ink viscosities create unexpected interactions, some areas flowing freely while others hold precise detail. This abstract piece captures not a specific landscape, but the emotional essence of those dawn moments when the sky explodes with the authentic colours one truly sees at sunrise.
