INSPIRATION

The 'Nesting Colony' is one of a series of colourful semi-abstract monotype prints created by Irish artist Carol Nunan. St. Kilda was purchased by the 5th Marquess of Bute in the 1930s who was an expert ornithologist. He later entrusted the island to the National Trust of Scotland as a nature reserve. The inspiration for this particular print comes from the nesting colonies of gannets found on the cliffs of St. Kilda in the Outer Hebrides.

‘The Outer Hebrides, is amongst her favourite places on Earth. She feels a strong connection to the islands off the west coast of Scotland and finds it to be a rich source of inspiration for her artistic work. The 'Nesting Colony' print specifically draws inspiration from the spectacular cliffs of St. Kilda, which rise dramatically out of the sea. The gannets, a type of seabird, form nesting colonies on these cliffs.’

The gannets are remarkable creatures that exhibit a diving behavior known as dive bombing. They plunge deep below the surface of the water in search of their food. Even though Carol currently lives in Rothesay, she often observes gannets from her house, feeding in Rothesay Bay.

It's important to note that while the 'Nesting Colony' print is inspired by the nesting colonies of gannets on St. Kilda, it is an imagined representation rather than a literal depiction of the location. Carol Nunan's artistic interpretation captures the essence and beauty of the gannets and their natural habitat.
